Key information

The number of cases of tuberculosis (TB), the crude notification rate per 100,000 of population, cases in indigenous population and in foreign-born persons, culture positive cases, smear positive pulmonary cases, multidrug-resistant cases, mono-resistant to isoniazid, deaths attributable to TB, outcomes reported in cases, TB meningitis cases. TB cases by year, Health Services Executive (HSE) area, sex, age, county, local health office (LHO), disease site and geographic origin/country of birth. Sputum smear and culture status for pulmonary TB cases, disease sites for extrapulmonary TB cases. TB meningitis cases classified by HSE area, age, history of BCG and culture status. Sensitivity results of drug resistant TB cases, treatment outcome by HSE area, method of case finding.

TB notification forms completed by public health doctors. These forms summarise all available clinical, microbiological, histological and epidemiological data. The completed dataset for Ireland is supplied to the TB Surveillance Unit at the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and also the TB unit at the World Health Organization (WHO).
