Key information

Number of private households and number of persons in private households classified by permanent/temporary, by town/rural, by composition, size and area (provinces, counties and cities), by composition, size and type of district; persons aged over 65, and over 70, living alone; statistics on permanent and on temporary housing units; family units classified by family cycle, age of youngest/oldest child, and number of children. Fertility statistics provide details on females by number of children born alive, which are classified by age group, martial status and town/rural, by area and age group, by Regional Authority area, by nationality, and by ethnic or cultural background. Information is supplied in the Small Area Population Statistics (SAPS) classified by Census Enumeration Areas, Dáil Constituencies, Electoral Divisions, Gaeltacht Areas, Garda Regions, Divisions and Districts, Health Service Executive Areas, Local Electoral Areas, Towns, Urban and Rural areas of each county.

The census figures relate to the de facto population, i.e. the figures include visitors present on census night as well as those in residence, while usual residents temporarily absent from the area are excluded from the census count.
